The Everglades is known as one of the
most unique and largest wetlands in the
world. It is facing increasing threats due to
human development. Development and the
expansion of cities are known to cause
detrimental environmental consequences.
This is due to expansion requiring not only
large amounts of natural resources but also
requiring large amounts of land. From
climate change to invasive species, the
negative impact of development is
constantly spreading which puts the
Everglades at greater risk
DOMINO EFFECT OF DEVELOPMENT
At first glance, development may seem
unrelated to climate change, but the two
are deeply connected. The expansion of
cities through more buildings, homes, and
roads in areas surrounding the Everglades
has more of an impact than you may think.
It leads to pollution, destruction of the
natural habitats of over 2000 species of
plants and animals, and loss of
biodiversity due to endangerment. All
these things play a role in increasing
climate change. The Everglades, a
natural carbon sink, plays a crucial
role in storing greenhouse gases, but as
development destroys these wetlands,
its ability to do this is weakened.
HOW YOU (YES, YOU! ) CAN HELP
If you feel motivated to combat this issue it is
critical to contact your local and state
government officials. Miami-Dade County
Commissioners, the South Florida Water
Management District, and environmental
agencies like the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection play key roles in
how and where development can take place.
Some things you can do are attend public
meetings if you’re a resident in the area, submit
comments on new development plans that are
being considered, and support environmental
organizations like the Everglades Foundation
through donations. By addressing these issues
now, we can protect Florida’s natural treasure
for future generations. Your voice is powerful.
