How Fashion Shapes Youth Culture

Natalie Sierra

Fashion isn’t just about clothes to many, it’s a way of expression and often reflect senses of personality. Trends come and go quickly, but they leave a big impact on youth
culture. Whether it’s social media, celebrities, or nostalgia, different influences shape the way teens and young adults dress. Fashion is actually more than just what looks good, it reflects personality, status, and even social movements.

Social Media & Celebrity Influence

Fashion trends used to be majorly controlled by magazines and
runway shows. Now, through outlets like media, they spread
instantly and worldwide. Celebrities and influencers also play a huge role in setting trends. People usually follow what they see in someone they admire. Hailey Bieber’s “clean girl” look made minimal makeup and slicked-back hair a huge trend, something which faced lots of backlash beforehand. While many other personnel helped reel in early 2000s fashion and brought back lowrise jeans, miniskirts, and prints, like leopard. Social media makes fashion more accessible, but it also creates pressure to constantly keep up with what’s trending, creating microtrends.

Hype Culture

For many, fashion is about more than just following trends,
it’s a way to express. Alternative styles let people stand out
and create their own sense of personality, also breaking the
idea that clothes need to fit into strict categories. Fashion in reality is a huge part of youth culture. Shaping the
way people present themselves and how they connect with
others. Whether through streetwear, vintage fashion, or bold
statement pieces, what people wear reflects who they are and
what they stand for. Trends may change quickly, but fashion
will always be a way for people to express themselves and
influence those around them.
